The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to North America, and Mexico will host matches in three spectacular stadiums: Estadio Azteca (Mexico City), Estadio BBVA (Monterrey), and Estadio Akron (Guadalajara). Each one carries its own history, design, and atmosphere, making Mexico an essential part of the tournament.

Known as the Colossus of Santa Úrsula, the legendary Estadio Azteca is the largest stadium in Latin America with over 87,000 seats. It’s the only stadium in the world to host two World Cup finals (1970 & 1986), including Pelé’s triumph and Maradona’s “Hand of God.”
For 2026, Azteca is undergoing a $100 million renovation—new locker rooms, VIP areas, LED screens, and a hybrid pitch. Set to reopen in March 2026, it will host the opening match on June 11, making history as the first stadium to host three World Cups.

Opened in 2015, Estadio BBVA—nicknamed El Gigante de Acero (Steel Giant)—is one of Mexico’s most modern arenas. With a capacity of 53,500, it offers fans stunning views of the Cerro de la Silla mountain and a sleek, futuristic design.
The stadium will host three group-stage matches and one round of 32 game. No major renovations were needed, as FIFA already considers it tournament-ready. Monterrey’s passionate fanbase and vibrant city life guarantee an unforgettable World Cup experience.

Built in 2010 and home to CD Guadalajara (Chivas), Estadio Akron seats 48,000 fans under its unique volcano-inspired design with a “floating cloud” roof. It will host four group-stage matches, including one featuring Mexico.
While traffic around the stadium is known to be tricky, the passion of Chivas fans, the excellent sightlines, and Guadalajara’s rich culture—tequila, mariachi, and colonial charm—make it a must-visit destination.

Mexico’s Contribution to 2026

With Azteca’s history, BBVA’s modernity, and Akron’s passion, Mexico is ready to showcase its football culture to the world. These three stadiums will play a central role in making the 2026 World Cup an unforgettable tournament.
