Northwestern University’s ambitious stadium project is quickly becoming reality. The new Ryan Field, with an estimated cost of $862 million, is set to break records as the most expensive college stadium ever built.
Construction officially began in June 2024, following the demolition of the old venue, and progress is already visible. The new 35,000-seat arena will be smaller than many Big Ten stadiums, but it promises an unmatched fan experience — with seating closer to the action, a dramatic overhead canopy to enhance atmosphere, and modern spaces designed for both game days and community use.
Sustainability is also at the heart of the project, with the stadium aiming for LEED Gold certification and reusing or recycling over 99% of materials from the previous structure.
The new Ryan Field is expected to open for the Fall 2026 season, marking a new era for Northwestern football and the Evanston community.
