The European Olympic Committees (EOC) Executive Committee has unanimously awarded Istanbul the fourth edition of the European Games in 2027.
Istanbul’s event venue plan requires no extra building beyond existing or planned venues in the city.
The Atatürk Olympic Stadium is expected to be the major venue for the Games, however this has yet to be confirmed.
The stadium was built at a cost of around $140 million (£110 million/€129 million) for Turkey’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, which were ultimately given to Beijing.
EOC sport director Peter Brüll delivered an evaluation report to the Executive Committee, resulting in Istanbul being awarded the 2027 tournament.
The study follows an EOC delegation’s evaluation visit to Istanbul earlier this month. The representatives assessed the city’s readiness to host the Games, including venues, transportation, security, accommodations, and athlete facilities.
“The EOC is delighted to approve Istanbul’s candidature to host the European Games in 2027,” stated EOC president Spyros Capralos.
“It is great news for both Europe’s athletes and the city.”Istanbul and Turkey have a long history of supporting international sports. The city has integrated sports into daily life for the benefit of its residents.
“We know it will be the perfect place for Europe’s best athletes to shine in 2027.”
The EOC and Istanbul’s local organising committee aim to increase the number of qualification events for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Turkish competitors are likely to benefit from home crowd support, increasing their chances of qualifying.
The Executive Committee’s decision will be submitted to the EOC General Assembly in Bucharest from June 6 to 7, for final ratification.
