The club’s idea is to build the stadium on the Gasólogo site, in Rio de Janeiro.
Flamengo formally submitted the stadium development plan for the Gasólogo location in Rio de Janeiro to Caixa. The land where the club planned to construct the arena is owned by the public bank.
The plan put out by the board is to construct Flamengo’s own residence on the site of the former Gasometer, which is situated in the Port Zone near the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal and the Novo Rio Bus Station at Avenida São Cristóvão nº 1200.
The 86,592.30 m² of land is owned by a Caixa Econômica Federal real estate fund, which may cause Flamengo some trouble. As a result, the club and the bank have already met. The area was assessed to be worth R$250 million.
Since the start of the Port Zone revitalization project for the 2016 Rio Olympics, the land has been owned by Caixa.
Flamengo intends to establish a well-liked area in the stands with more reasonably priced tickets for fans with modest incomes, should the stadium succeed. Speaking with the “Máquina do Esporte” channel, the club’s vice-president of marketing and communication offered his thoughts on the situation.
“Maracanã does a bad job at identifying which places are best for finding inexpensive tickets. The restrooms, the link to the entrance… Very clear areas cannot be opened up to provide a significantly different cost. There will be a more successfully popular region if we can make it work. Since you could then construct a stadium with this goal,” he remarked.
Flamengo’s board is now the sole one considering the idea, hence the team is lacking many specifics regarding the design of the new stadium. One topic of dispute is the stadium’s overall capacity.
The stadium where the red-and-black club now plays, Maracanã, can hold up to 70,000 spectators. Given the strength of its fan base, Flamengo shouldn’t construct an arena with fewer seats.
