A 24,000 Seater Stadium Growing from the Forest
The future Aarhus Stadium in Denmark, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in collaboration with Sweco and Tredje Natur, is quickly becoming a reality. This ambitious project — known as the “Arena of the Forest” — will redefine how nature and modern sports architecture coexist.
Nestled in Marselisborg Forest, the new stadium aims to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The design is inspired by the vertical rhythm of the tall trees, using natural materials and soft curves to mirror the forest’s organic forms. With a single-tier seating bowl, fans will be closer to the action than ever before, creating an electrifying and intimate match-day experience.
Sustainable Construction and Historic Preservation
The new Aarhus Stadium emphasizes sustainability, using recycled concrete, locally sourced steel, and timber from certified forests. Every design choice reflects Denmark’s strong environmental vision.
Next to the new arena, the historic Stadionhallerne building — built in 1918 — will be restored to preserve its original red façade and white decorative details, maintaining the site’s historic character while introducing a modern identity.
Construction Progress — October 2025 Update
Demolition of the old stadium began in 2024, and the site has now been completely cleared. The main stand is already taking shape, showing the first signs of the stadium’s striking new design. Meanwhile, foundation work for the other stands is actively progressing, marking a key phase in the transformation.
The construction is moving steadily toward its goal, with the grand opening planned for 2026. Once completed, the new Aarhus Stadium will not only be the proud home of AGF Aarhus but also a multi-purpose venue for cultural and community events year-round.
