Almost two decades after the Emirates Stadium opened its doors — Arsenal are now preparing for a major new chapter: expanding the stadium’s capacity from 60,704 to around 80,000 seats.

This move is not just about increasing matchday revenue, but also a bold statement of intent. According to co-chair Josh Kroenke, the club began exploring upgrade options last summer. Since then, renowned architects have been brought in to propose design ideas that could significantly boost capacity.

Key redevelopment features include:

  • New Roof Structure: The stadium’s iconic roof is set to be redesigned and extended to provide better coverage and improve acoustics inside the ground, enhancing the matchday atmosphere for fans.
  • Increased Seating: The expansion will focus on adding over 19,000 new seats, including both general admission and premium sections, pushing the total capacity close to 80,000.
  • Enhanced VIP & Hospitality Areas: A major focus will be the development of new VIP lounges, hospitality suites, and club-level seating to boost corporate revenue streams and attract high-end clientele.
  • Upgraded Retail and Fan Zones: Arsenal plans to revamp the club store, introduce new merchandise outlets, and expand fan zones within and around the stadium for a more interactive pre-match experience.
  • Surrounding Area Development: The club also wants to improve the areas around the stadium by adding landscaped public spaces, better pedestrian access, and improved transport connectivity to manage higher matchday footfall.
  • Sustainability Improvements: The redevelopment will include modern energy-efficient systems, aiming to lower the stadium’s carbon footprint in line with the club’s long-term environmental goals.

While the Emirates Stadium was originally designed to secure Arsenal’s financial independence, the reality has been more complex. Despite record matchday income in 2023–24 (£137 million), the club still posted a loss of nearly £18 million, highlighting the financial pressure of modern football.

In a Premier League landscape dominated by billionaire owners and sovereign wealth, Arsenal’s move to expand and modernize their stadium shows they’re not stepping back — they’re stepping up. This ambitious project is not just about numbers; it’s about staying competitive at the highest level while offering fans a world-class experience.
