Even with the two new stadiums for Réal Madrid and Barcelona, “El Classico” still has a fierce rivalry. Which is the best, New Camp Nou or New Bernabeu? Who is more affordable and whose features are the best? Supporters on our YouTube Channel argue about these and many other issues, especially regarding costs, which we will talk about in this article.
Let’s start with Bernabeu stadium, When the works start in 2019, the Redevelopment of the Real Madrid stadium is expected to cost around 890 million euros. The Santiago Bernabeu was last renovated in 1980 (for the World Cup). After 40 years with the same appearance, in 2019 the club decided to renovate the entire building into a new stadium with modern technology. And, of course, it costs a lot of money.
As a result, the cost of the stadium has increased to more than 1 billion euros. A figure that is more than double the initial budget of the Board of Directors (€525 million) and which has increased due to inflation caused by the war in Ukraine, the coronavirus pandemic and the increase in the cost of energy, as well as unplanned works , such as the greenhouse where the grass will be stored or the new parking lots in the surrounding area.
The Bernabeu stadium has a completely new facade, a retractable roof, a 360-degree video board, an access tunnel, a new grandstand and a retractable pitch.
Work on the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou has been going on for almost a year, and it is working at a satisfactory pace. The stadium has undergone some changes from the initial project, and is expected to cost around 900 million euros.
Comparing the two stadiums, but considering that Real Madrid has spent 1 billion euros on the remodeling of the Santiago Bernabeu after planning to spend 800 million euros, we can probably expect this figure to be slightly higher for Barcelona’s stadium as well.
We remind you that the entire Espai Barca project is expected to cost 1.4 billion euros, where only the Camp Nou stadium will cost 900 million euros.
The Camp Nou redevelopment is expected to be fully completed by June 2026, although Barça want to be able to return to play at their ground in time for their 125th anniversary on 29 November 2024.
Beyond the eternal historical rivalry between the two clubs, both sides of the fans should be proud of the new stadiums, which are expected to be among the most modern in Europe and the world – which means more events, more visitors and more money.
