Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is pleased with his team’s performance thus far, as they lead LaLiga and set to visit RB Leipzig with a 1-0 lead in their Champions League last-16 second leg game, but the Italian said that his job still entailed a lot of pain.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the 64-year-old discussed the personal responsibility that comes with being Real Madrid’s manager, as well as the effort to deal with the mental challenge that players and staff face in such a competitive atmosphere.
“My work is more about suffering than happiness,” a contemplative Ancelotti stated at a news conference.
“I enjoy my work, especially at Real Madrid, since it’s the best club in the world for what I do. However, my employment mostly involves dealing with daily challenges that create sorrow. It is not just winning that makes you happy, and even when you win, there are those around you who are unhappy. It’s possible that the guy hasn’t played… That has an influence on overall contentment.
“Suffering is entirely yours to have. Happiness may be shared with others, but pain cannot. So I’m alright because of where I am and my work, but I’m experiencing more misery than enjoyment…”
Ancelotti’s Real Madrid are top of LaLiga after one defeat in 27 matches, little over two months after extending his contract until 2026 following months of doubt over his future, with Brazil’s FA seeking him to take over as manager.
Unbeaten in the Champions League as they resume their quest for a record-extending 15th European Cup victory, Ancelotti said he was pleased with where his team stands, despite injuries to key players such as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defenders David Alaba and Eder Militao with ACL tears, but added that it would be meaningless if they did not finish the season on a high note.
“We have to pursue our dream of winning the Champions League.” So far, we’ve done well, but there are still two to three months to go,” Ancelotti stated.
“I can’t blame my team at the time. The essential aspect is that I have excellent players. Players are eager to learn, progress, and embrace the club. They accept all you put on the table. They do everything they can to succeed and contribute to the team.
